Report Released into November Darwin - Katherine Blackout

Following the system-wide power outage that occurred on the Darwin-Katherine grid on 18 November 2020, Power and Water conducted a comprehensive and independent investigation as required under the System Control Technical Code and provided their final report to the Utilities Commission. This major power disruption incident affected over 49,000 Territorians, for up to around four hours.
Today, the findings of this investigation have been released.
The investigation outlines key recommendations to prevent similar incidents occurring in the future. A number of actions have been completed and others are underway in order to implement the recommendations. All actions are expected to be completed by August 2021, and Power and Water will provide regular updates to the Minister until all actions are finalised. ....

Northern Territory Police and NT Fire and Rescue Service are investigating a structure fire in Katherine that occurred yesterday afternoon.
Shortly before 2pm, a woman observed smoke coming from inside a cupboard in her residence on Maluka Road.
NT Police responded and ensured all occupants were evacuated safely from the house.
Fire crews extinguished the fire that had progressed rapidly, destroying the bedroom and living areas of the home.
It is understood two children had been playing with a lighter.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Spain said, “Sunday serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly structure fires can start and spread, as well as the importance of working smoke alarms. Police and Fire crews responded quickly and professionally, and luckily no one was injured”. ....

Katherine Ognyanova, an assistant professor at Rutgers University-New Brunswick’s School of Communication and Information, is the lead author of the new report.
New Jerseyans are relaxing some of their adherence to social distancing and public health recommendations, according to a new survey by researchers from Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Northeastern, Harvard and Northwestern universities.
The data, published by The COVID States Project, indicates that as COVID-19 case numbers decreased in 2021, behaviors like going to work, going to the gym, taking mass transit, handwashing or being in a room with people outside the home, relaxed. ....
