By Calvin Reid | Feb 04, 2021 The Independent Book Publishers Association announced that IBPA board of directors has elected Patagonia Books director Karla Olson to her second term as board chair during its meeting on January 27. Olson’s second term will begin on July 1 and it will be her final year in the position. In addition, the IBPA board nominating committee has selected seven candidates to stand for election to the association s board during the IBPA’s 2021 annual meeting to be held April 7. The candidates that are elected to the board will serve a two-year term staring July 1. The candidates include Renita Bryant, founder and CEO of Mynd Matters Publishing; Maggie Langrick, founder and publisher of Wonderwell; John Maher, news and digital editor, ....

(Shutterstock) BIRMINGHAM, AL A Birmingham man will serve 12 months in prison after being pleading guilty to one count of tax evasion in February and being sentenced this week, U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona for the Northern District of Alabama announced on Monday. In a news release, Escalona said the man, John P. Cooney, admitted in 2011 that he owed to $780,000 to the IRS for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 tax years. The amount went unpaid. Cooney then created a nominee corporation, GVA Advisors, and had payments sent through the corporation rather than directly to him, concealing the payments from the IRS and evading payments, Escalona said. ....
