A ceremony was held at Bouligny Plaza in downtown New Iberia to unveil Blanco s State Historical Marker, which is located on Main Street.
Louisiana s first female governor and a New Iberia native, Blanco died in 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 76.

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) A new historical marker honoring the late Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco has been unveiled in her hometown of New Iberia.
Gov. John Bel Edwards, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and other state and local officials were in New Iberia on Wednesday for the ceremony held to recognize Louisiana’s first female governor.
Blanco died in 2019 after a lengthy bout with cancer. She was 76.
New Iberia Mayor Freddie Decourt told news outlets the city is proud to honor Blanco, who made an impact on so many.
“She made not only a huge difference, you can tell our community loved her. Not that she didn’t make a difference across the state, it just shows how a local person from New Iberia, a woman, can make just such a huge impact for our community. But not only that, for our whole state,” he said. ....

NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s political reputation has been in a state of recovery, and impetus for the turnaround seems to be coming from the places she called home.
Here’s how newfound affection for the state’s 54th governor, who died in August 2019, is revealing itself:
Her hometown of New Iberia is planning a 3:30 p.m. May 12 unveiling of a state marker honoring her at Bouligny Plaza, 128 W. Main St. Gov. John Bel Edwards, Lt. Gov.
