Wisconsin Senate approves Republican election changes | News, Sports, Jobs

Associated Press
MADISON, Wis. (AP) Republicans who control the Wisconsin Senate moved Wednesday to change state elections based largely on false claims that the November election was tainted, passing bills that would make interfering with election observers a crime and barring polling officials from accepting private grants to aid with administration.
The proposals are part of a larger package of GOP-authored measures addressing issues former President Donald Trump and his supporters raised following Joe Biden’s narrow win in the battleground state. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who has complained about Republican attempts to make absentee voting more difficult, is almost certain to veto every one of them. ....

Republican Wisconsin Lawmakers Disapprove of Governor's Weed Legalization Plans

Wisconsin’s Journey Toward Marijuana Legalization
Before Tony Evers took office in early 2019, there had already been three separate bills introduced to legalize cannabis in Wisconsin – to no avail. But the newly-elected governor didn’t waste time in making his goals crystal clear. While constructing the state budget proposal in 2019, Gov. Evers announced plans to include the decriminalization of marijuana possession and the legalization of medical marijuana in the rundown.
Despite the push, attempts at cannabis reform were stripped from the plan by Republican lawmakers, and the hopes of a new era in Wisconsin, sans prohibition, were dashed once again. In the following months, Gov. Evers continued pressuring state legislators to take action on the matter saying, “When more than 80 percent of our state supports medical marijuana…and elected officials can ignore those numbers without consequence, folks, something’s wrong,” at his 2020 State of the State addre ....

Radical Resolution Calling for a Constitutional Rewrite Passes Wisconsin Assembly

February 25, 2020 - 11:36am
The Wisconsin Assembly passed a resolution calling for a rewrite of the U.S. Constitution on February 18
by a 60-38 vote, almost entirely along party lines. The measure, Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 77, now heads to the Senate, where its companion, Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 57, has yet to move out of committee.
If passed, Wisconsin would become the 16
th state to back right-wing efforts to call for a constitutional convention to propose sweeping amendments to the Constitution to curtail the powers of the federal government. Under Article V of the Constitution, at least two-thirds of the States must submit applications in order to convene a constitutional convention.  ....

Local legislators want UWEC building money in next state budget

EAU CLAIRE — Getting the second half of funding for a new academic building at UW-Eau Claire into the next state budget is among top priorities for state legislators representing the area.
During a Friday morning panel discussion hosted online by the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, local politicians from both sides of the aisle spoke about their intention to push for $147 million needed to push ahead with a new Science and Health Sciences building at the local campus.
“That was on the top of my list,” said state Sen. Jeff Smith, D-town of Brunswick.
Smith said he personally met with Gov. Tony Evers to urge him to include the building’s funding in the budget proposal, and the senator expressed a note of cautious optimism that it would get in. ....
