The famed Darwin s Arch in the Galapagos Islands has lost its top, and officials are blaming natural erosion of the stone.
Ecuador s Environment Ministry reported the collapse on its Facebook page.
The rock structure 43m (141 feet) high, 70m (230 feet) long and 23m (75 feet) wide is less than 1km (about half a mile) from Darwin Island and it s a popular spot for scuba divers. It s not accessible by land.
Obviously all the people from the Galapagos felt nostalgic because it s something we re familiar with since childhood, and to know that it has changed was a bit of a shock, said Washington Tapia, director of conservation at Galapagos Conservancy. ....

I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Galápagos seven times as a tour leader. One of my favourite islands – though seldom visited because of its relative isolation – was Genovesa (Tower). It had been top of my list since reading the book that first inspired me to explore this archipelago in 1973: Bryan Nelson’s Galapagos: Islands of Birds.
Bryan and his wife June spent a year on two uninhabited islands in 1964, studying the birds and living a Robinson Crusoe existence (although I don’t think Crusoe ate as much Spam).  ....
