A GREENOCK councillor today hit out after it emerged that not one of the 25 apprentices recruited to work on the town s new £21m new health centre was local. Colin Jackson slammed contractors Hub West and bosses at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde for failing to give opportunities for young people, especially those who live near the new-build in a neighbourhood which has the highest levels of poverty in the country. Recruitment of apprentices had been included on a list of community benefits trumpeted as part of the wider project. Health board chiefs insist attempts were made to find apprentices from Inverclyde but Mr Jackson says this is not good enough. ....

Over the last five years, the SNP in government have invested almost £30 million in delivering Orchard View and the new Greenock Health Centre in addition to the near £2m theatre investment at the IRH. This shows that we are prepared to invest in improving local healthcare facilities - which in turn will improve health outcomes for local people. Mr McMillan also slammed Labour s stance on Inverclyde Royal Hospital. He said: Despite the outcry from Labour politicians that the SNP manifesto did not make specific mention of investment in the IRH, their own manifesto doesn t include any costings for improving local healthcare infrastructure. ....

A BINGO hall in Greenock has had a full house of vaccine patients over the last few weeks. Bingo 3,000 has stepped in to do its bit in the fight against coronavirus as it helps Ardgowan Medical Practice roll out the second Covid-19 jag. Practice manager Angela Owens said she had been looking for a suitable venue for their 75+ and shielding patients and she thought the bingo hall would be ideal. A total of 7,000 patients have been vaccinated over the last four weeks. Angela said: Our first vaccination roll-out was in Greenock Town Hall and at Greenock Health Centre, but when the Town Hall became a mass vaccination centre, we had to find another venue because of social distancing. ....
