Attendees at Auckland s Anzac Day commemorations say they are thankful to be able to gather again after missing a year due to Covid-19.
About 15,000 people attended the city s main Dawn Service at the Auckland War Memorial Museum under clear skies.
Paul Banks, whose father flew in combat in World War II and whose mother was in the civil defence corps in London, said the service was particularly special.
It s been two years since we ve had one of these. By the time The Last Post and the Lament were played, I had tears in my eyes. It was far more moving emotionally for me than I can remember in the past, Banks said. ....

Christchurch's Anzac Day commemoration 'even more special' after lockdown year


Dalziel said New Zealand was lucky to be able to commemorate Anzac Day together this year as public events were still not possible in many other countries.
Anzac Day was not only about honouring the service and sacrifice of those who died in warfare, but also about committing to the peaceful resolution of conflict, she said.

Thousands of New Zealanders have this morning gathered together across the country to mark Anzac Day - for the first time in two years after Covid-19 restrictions meant the significant anniversary had to be marked without public services in 2020 for the first time since 1916.
And even recent arrivals in managed isolation have been able to mark the occasion.
Last year instead of dawn services and memorials Kiwis stood at the end of their driveways to remember those who served and lost their lives at war. ....
