'You Can't Claim Self-defense If You Started It': Prosecutors In Ahmaud Arbery Case Say Victim's Past Not Relevant, Only Question Is Whether Alleged Killers' Acts Were Reasonable


A judge will determine if defense attorneys can use Ahmaud Arbery’s mental health records to help absolve his alleged killers during their respective murder trials later this year.
Superior Court Judge Timothy R. Wamsley, the judge presiding over all three cases, heard two days of arguments May 12 and 13 in a Brunswick courtroom. It was a pivotal hearing in the cases against the three white men accused of hunting Arbery down and killing him.
William “Roddie” Bryan, Greg McMichael, 65, and his 35-year-old son Travis face life in prison without the possibility of parole if they’re convicted of murder. Jury selection is set to begin Oct. 18 to decide their fates. ....

The three white men charged with killing Ahmaud Arbery pleaded not guilty to the federal charges Tuesday. They are due in court on the state charges Wednesday.

In their first federal court appearance, Travis and Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan pleaded not guilty to hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges. The McMichaels also pleaded not guilty to additional firearms charges. ....

Trial In Ahmaud Arbery Killing Set To Begin Oct. 18


 
Jury selection will begin Oct. 18 in the trial of three men on state murder charges. They have also been charged, separately, with a federal hate crime.

The trial of the men charged with killing Ahmaud Arbery near Brunswick last year will begin October 18.
Judge Timothy Walmsley issued a notice Friday that jury selection will begin that day in the trial of Gregory and Travis McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan.
All three men face charges including murder and assault in the shooting.
Arbery was jogging through the men’s neighborhood February 2020. Investigators say the defendants, who are white, pursued the 25-year-old Black man in pickup trucks.  ....

Ahmaud Arbery, who was ambushed and fatally shot in Georgia by two white men, organized a multi-mile run to raise awareness about his murder and honor him on what would’ve been his 26th birthday. Arbery’s mother, 
Wanda Cooper-Jones, says she never gave the organization permission to fundraise in her son’s name and has spoken publicly against it.

On Thursday, the Georgia-based non-profit organization announced the agreement they made with Cooper-Jones via a joint press release. It stated that “As part of the agreement, the 2:23 Foundation has decided to phase out its usage of the 2:23 Foundation mark and donate the monies raised from their virtual run and merchandise sales to Ms. Cooper-Jones’ newly established foundation in honor of her son.” ....

The Department of Justice announced Wednesday, April 28, that federal prosecutors have indicted the three men accused of killing
Ahmaud Arbery with hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges.

Bryan Jr. allegedly armed themselves with firearms and chased down 25-year-old Arbery while he was jogging on a public road near Brunswick, Georgia on Feb. 23, 2020. In a video of Arbery’s death recorded by Bryan, Travis McMichael and Arbery are seen scuffling before three gunshots are heard. The McMichaels claimed to be carrying out a citizen’s arrest and acting in self-defense. Before the fatal shooting, Bryan allegedly hit Arbery with his truck after he joined the McMichaels, who were pursuing Arbery in their vehicle. ....
