GLEN CARBON A pending medical retirement prompted Glen Carbon Police Chief Todd Link to make an unusual request at Tuesday’s village board meeting.
Link proposed allowing Glen Carbon to temporarily hire above its authorized manning and extend an offer of employment to Alton Police Officer Aaron Porter, the top candidate on Glen Carbon’s lateral hire list of police officers.
”Lateral hire candidates are in great demand throughout this region,” Link said in his request. “Hiring them saves communities time and expense because lateral candidates are already certified police officers in good standing, do not require academy training and often complete field training and probationary periods at a quicker rate than their non-police trained counterparts.” ....

SPRINGFIELD A criminal justice reform bill opposed by Madison County law enforcement officials was approved Wednesday by the Illinois House of Representatives.
Just before noon, the House voted 60-50 to approve House Bill 3563, formerly known as House Bill 163. The passage came about seven hours after the Illinois Senate, at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, approved the bill 32-23. ....
