New lounge, Jazz It Up, opens in Five Points in New Bern

Imagine turning a dream you have had for years into reality? That’s exactly what happened for Inez Collins Holloway of New Bern.
For six years, Holloway had a vision of a place where people could come to sit and relax and listen to the smooth sounds of jazz music or some soft pop, country or rhythm and blues or just enjoy a good conversation.
In March 2021, she opened Jazz It Up, which she calls a lounge and not a bar, where everyone can stop in and feel comfortable and relaxed.
The lounge is located at 1017B Broad Street in the Five Points area of downtown New Bern. ....

Work at Martin Marietta Park this summer to include swim beach

Phase 1 work at Martin Marietta Park, New Bern’s 900 acre entertainment and water sports project, is set to ramp up this summer with the addition of a new swim beach, playground and shelter area.
According to Foster Hughes, Parks and Recreation director, the City has just received an Army Corps of Engineers wetland permit for the swim beach. Hughes said the goal is to open the beach sometime this summer.
“We’ve actually had some scuba divers that have been going out and assessing the area that we’re looking at,” said Hughes. “We pretty much knew how shallow it was at a certain depth so they’re mapping that out for us and making sure there are no hazards and things like that. We want to make it as safe as possible.” ....

The Country Biscuit receives trademark on name, slogan

Michelle Lynn knew at age 10 that she wanted to one day own her own restaurant. Through her hard work and determination, her childhood dream became a reality.
In July, she started the process of getting the name, logo and biscuit slogan trademarked. She started the process on her own, but found it more difficult than she expected and had to hire attorneys to complete the process. She received the trademark on her biscuit slogan on Dec. 1 and the trademark on the name and logo on Feb. 21.
One thing I want young people to know is whatever it is they want to do or what their purpose is, pursue it and do what makes you happy, said Lynn. I followed my dream and I am doing exactly what I love, she said.  ....

Lenoir County man arrested for Craven, Jones high-speed chase

A Craven County Sheriff s deputy was involved in a high-speed chase overnight that covered three counties and resulted in one arrest of a Lenoir county man.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy observed Walter Frank Ingram Jr., driving a car with an expired license plate and no insurance on Glenburnie Road at about 11 p.m.
When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop the vehicle instead exited onto US Highway 70 west while throwing objects from his vehicle. Deputies recovered approximately 80 individual packets containing crack and powder cocaine.
The vehicle continued west on 70 at speeds in excess of 100 mph,  pursued by Craven deputies. Ingram led officers through craven and Jones County, then into Lenoir where troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol deployed stop sticks, partially disabling the vehicle. ....

Litter wars: state and local leaders are preparing for the fight

Sun Journal
North Carolina’s highways are facing a growing problem of litter-overload with papers and packaging piling up everywhere you go. It has seemingly reached a saturation point as county and state leaders are admitting embarrassment at how visitors to the state must see us, and action is beginning to happen to fight the problem.
The littering comes from numerous sources: people simply throwing their trash out the window as they drive along is the best known – and probably the hardest to catch. You see their signature everywhere – at butt-strewn intersections where they just finished off that last cigarette; at exit ramps and the last dozen yards before bridges where passengers and drivers seem to get a sudden urge to lose that trash before going on. ....
