Work at Martin Marietta Park this summer to include swim beach

Phase 1 work at Martin Marietta Park, New Bern’s 900 acre entertainment and water sports project, is set to ramp up this summer with the addition of a new swim beach, playground and shelter area.
According to Foster Hughes, Parks and Recreation director, the City has just received an Army Corps of Engineers wetland permit for the swim beach. Hughes said the goal is to open the beach sometime this summer.
“We’ve actually had some scuba divers that have been going out and assessing the area that we’re looking at,” said Hughes. “We pretty much knew how shallow it was at a certain depth so they’re mapping that out for us and making sure there are no hazards and things like that. We want to make it as safe as possible.” ....

Improved funding means more wastewater projects getting built on Cape Cod

ORLEANS A bright red crane stood out against a nearly cloudless blue spring sky, hoisting blocks of scaffolding from the site’s access road into a massive concrete foundation.
The scaffolding was part of a temporary support system for the pouring of the slab of the first floor of Orleans’ new $38.1 million wastewater treatment plant, which is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2022. For the past two years, Orleans streets also bustled with crews installing the pipes for the $21.4 million downtown sewer collection system.
This is a moment capping over two decades of contentious debate in Orleans, and one that Alan McClennen, a former longtime Orleans select board member, could scarcely have believed possible just a few years ago when the cost of the town’s wastewater cleanup plan seemed insurmountable. ....

Gov. John Carney s proposed spending plan for next fiscal year includes the first steps toward statewide police body cameras, funding the ongoing COVID-19 response and increases in the minimum wage, as well as small raises for state workers.
The measures are a signal that Delaware officials are keeping their promise to hold law enforcement accountable in response to the Black Lives Matter movement while also bracing for an ongoing fight against the virus at least until the latter half of this year. ....

Delaware Gov. John Carney's State of the State speech: 7 things to know

Delaware News Journal
In his State of the State speech to Cabinet members and state lawmakers, Gov. John Carney promised a better year ahead as Delaware continues to reel from the pandemic.
The virtual speech was starkly different from the speech that Carney made a year ago in the crowded House chamber of Legislative Hall in Dover, just as the first case of COVID-19 had made its way into the U.S.
Carney s speech, the first of his second term, on Tuesday touched on promises that he made last year but were put on hold during the pandemic.
In the Senate chamber across the hall from last year s speech, this time near-empty, the Democratic governor spoke on camera to his state that has suffered through more than 10 months of the global pandemic that due to Carney s restrictions has shuttered businesses, led to more than 160,000 people filing for unemployment and taken 1,049 lives to date. ....
