Salt panning returns to Highland village after 200 years


Harvested from the sea and produced using coal mined from the small pocket of Jurassic rock, Brora’s ‘white gold’ salt was a prized commodity which told its own story of Highland history.
First produced in 1598 in a remarkable example of female enterprise, the northeast village’s sea salt industry told its own story of Highland history, encompassing Jacobite rebellion and Highland clearances.
At its peak, Brora – five miles north of Golspie - was one of the nation’s leading and most northern producers of salt, with demand coming from as far afield as Denmark and London.
While the rich seams of highly combustible Jurassic coal fired the Sutherland village’s woollen mills, distilleries and brickworks, and even helped it become one of the first Highland towns to boast electric street lighting – earning Brora the nickname ‘Electric City’. ....

Tentative plans are being laid to honour one of Brora’s most famous residents - legendary flytier Megan Boyd, who died in 2001.
Discussions are taking place about commissioning an art installation in her memory and erecting it at one of the gateways to the village, possibly near to the Old Cyne School, in line for conversion into a museum by Clyne Heritage Society.

Under discussion is a a gigantic sculpture of one of Ms Boyd’s colourful salmon fishing flies, but it is intended that it will have a ‘wow factor’ and be a visitor attraction in its own right. ....

Joy at £982k pledge for Old Clyne School transformation

A £2.8 million project to transform the historic Old Clyne School in Brora into a community heritage centre, café and shop is set to receive a substantial award from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF).
Clyne Heritage Society, which is behind the initiative, was informed this week that the RCGF Investment Panel had met in November and recommended that a grant of £982,793 be made. A formal offer of the grant is expected to be issued following ‘Scottish budget agreement’. ....

Plans to transform a 19th century Aberdeen school into affordable housing have received a “vital” £1.4 million shot in the arm – alongside a number of projects in the Highlands and Islands.
The Victoria Road school project, led by Torry Development Trust and Grampian Housing Association, will see the site turned into homes after it fell into disrepair following its closure in 2008. ....
