Xposure 2021: War photographer visiting Sharjah highlights human cost of conflict

From the frontline
She had been covering frontline medics in the war against Daesh in Mosul, Iraq. “In 2017, I documented the work of international medics operating out of makeshift field clinics behind the front lines in Mosul. The photographs highlight the trauma faced by civilians caught in this war and also the incredible work of the volunteers who saved countless lives at great risk to their own,” she said. “I joined a unit on the front line and with my camera swinging around my neck and my helmet protecting my head. I spent a lot of time getting the whole picture and telling the human stories of people caught in the crossfire, all while taking shelter in deserted houses and rumbled neighbourhoods.” ....

At Xposure, Al Olabi showed images that helped the audience understand the secrets of the winter, summer and autumn skies. He showed them the beauty of our Milky Way galaxy through a detailed imagery of formations such as Rosette nebula, Horsehead nebula, Lagoon nebula, Eagle nebula, Cat paw nebula and much more. Al Olabi also explained how he looked for the darkest areas all over the Middle East to catch the stars clearly, shared images of fossils in Wadi Hitan and the sophisticated formations in the White desert of Egypt. Sami also revealed the secrets of his photography with budding photographers, telling them they did not need complex equipment and software to shoot nightscapes. ....

In the nearly three years since the #MeToo movement transformed journalism, Magnum Photos, the world’s most prestigious photo agency, has portrayed itself as an industry leader. Magnum issued a code of conduct for its members in 2018, and its CEO boasted the same year it had not received a single complaint against any of its photographers. The agency chose women as both president and CEO, added more female photographers, and insisted it was taking harassment and abuse seriously.
But even as Magnum touted its efforts to confront the industry’s abuses, women who worked with one of the agency’s best-known photographers were telling a different story. Eleven women have described to CJR inappropriate behavior from David Alan Harvey over a span of thirteen years, ranging from suggestive comments to unwanted sexual advances to masturbating without their consent on video calls.
