London engineer now working to combat homelessness

By Amy Simon
Andy Spriet
We just have to find ways of taking better care of each other.”
If you take a look at downtown London, Ont., the issue of homelessness seems to be on an exponential rise. Builder and engineer Andy Spriet of Spriet Associates Engineers and Architects believes that his shelter design can contribute to helping those struggling with homelessness.
Having his office downtown, Spriet shares how he has seen people trying to find a safe place to sleep, huddling against their personal possessions as they brace the cold night ahead.
Working with WISH (Winter Interim Solution to Homelessness) coalition, they’ve developed two prototypes for temporary emergency shelters using converted construction portables.

By Jess Gould

‘Eid’ as a word means a joyous return. The celebration of Eid follows the end of a month of intensive worship. At the end of the month of fasting before dawn until sunset with Ramadan, it is to help those to re-evaluate and become a better-developed human being.
At the end of Ramadan comes the celebrations. Usually, it is celebrated by starting the day with a huge communal gathering at the places of worship. This year, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, plans have been shifted to celebrate virtually.
Munir El-Kassim is the Director of Religious Affairs at the Islamic Centre of Southwest Ontario. El-Kassim reminisces on his favourite part of celebrating Eid “The family, and the spirit of togetherness, when I have a chance to see all my children and my grandchildren all celebrating, this is basically what Eid is for me and the entire family.”

COMMENTARY: The Chauvin – the use of cameras in the courtroom

By Victoria Newman
Apr 21, 2021 4:50 PM
After the jury gave their decision in the case of Derek Chauvin, some felt relieved and rejoiced at the outcome.
It was an event that shook the world. People calling on and rallying for justice to be served. A video taken by a bystander on May 25, shows a police officer, Chauvin, kneeling on a man’s neck for nine and a half minutes while he cried out that he could not breathe. George Floyd’s body slowly went limp as he struggled for air.
These were the events that led to the trial where the jury found an ex-Minneapolis police officer, Chauvin, guilty on all charges in the death of Floyd.

“We’ve made the best out of a bad situation” Grace Vo-Edwards, a member of the prom committee says.
After receiving word about a virtual graduation ceremony, students at Sir Fredrick Banting Secondary School are still hoping to have an in-person prom celebration this year.
The graduating students should still be able to walk across the stage to receive their diploma at the end of the year. Depending on the state of the pandemic, the school is planning on pre-recording the ceremony and celebrating via livestream.

“If we’re not going to school for the rest of the year, we can’t walk across the stage. But we can still purchase the gown and go on our own time to take photos, which I’m most excited for” Ionna Hopper, grade 12 student and head of the prom committee says.

Local support center for sex workers part of constitutional challenge

By Vasilios Bellos

SafeSpace London is a local organization that supports sex workers, women, and gender non-conforming individuals in crises. Currently, the group along with 24 other members make up the The Canadian Alliance for Sex Work Law Reform. The alliance is currently launching a constitutional challenge against several amendments that came to life after the enactment of Bill C-36. Board member with SafeSpace London, Melissa Lukings, describes what Bill C-36 is.
“So in 2013, the Bedford case happened and the Supreme Court decided the current laws of sex work infringed upon the constitutional provisions under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Bill C-36 was a response to that. Unfortunately, it ended up criminalizing for the first time ever sex work and related activities, so transactions, things like that. Third party material benefits, advertising, purchasing, and selling, so these are things it criminalized for the first time ever in Canadian history. Since then we’ve been trying to change that because the laws are horrific for real life actual sex workers.”

MLHU on the long weekend

By Victoria Newman
Mar 31, 2021 10:10 PM
Easter weekend is coming soon! But with COVID-19 case numbers on the rise, many are left wondering how they can celebrate the long weekend.
“When we think about what’s really safe, what’s not safe, and what’s in the middle. You know, on the safest side of things is staying home… and celebrating virtually with people. In the middle there are potentials to see people in an outdoor environment in which two meters maintained so things like a walk. But what really can’t happen is an outdoor party. That isn’t going to be helpful at all. And large gatherings, even outdoors, if people are in close proximity at this point in time is not something we can advise,” said Dr. Alex Summers, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU).

What are local bars expecting this St. Patrick's Day?

Last years festivities were very toned down in the city of London. Many are fearing this year that COVID fatigue may play a role in individuals not taking the restrictions as seriously this time around, especially with the recent increase in house-party related cases.
In terms of bars and restaurants, it has already been made clear that police will have a significant downtown presence throughout St. Patrick’s Day. These businesses were not open last year due to the full COVID shutdown, so they are dealing with a brand new experience.
Billy Thomson, General Manager at The Scot’s Corner on Dundas Street, describes how preparation for this years St. Patrick’s Day is unique.
