Deadly clashes in southern Iraq between protesters and security forces

Deadly clashes erupted between Iraqi security forces and anti-government protesters on Sunday in the southern city of Nasiriyah following the death of two activists and a policeman.
The protests started last Friday after security forces arrested an activist in the city’s Haboubi Square.
Footage showed protesters running and chanting while security forces confronted them with
teargas and gunshots,
injured.
One policeman was killed and 33 others were injured during the events that took place today, Sunday, in the city of Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate,
the country s security forces said.

Iraq was the world’s second deadliest country for journalists in 2020, according to an annual report published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday. 
Fifty journalists were killed worldwide in connection with their work between 1 January and 15 December, marginally down from the 53 killed last year. 
Mexico was the most dangerous country for journalists with eight killings, followed by Iraq (six), Afghanistan (five), Pakistan (four) and India (four).  ....

Number of journalists murdered doubles in 2020

The number of journalists targeted and killed has doubled globally in 2020, according to data compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The findings released on Tuesday found at least 30 journalists were killed this year, 21 of whom were targeted because of their work. The number of those murdered is more than double the previous record of 2019, which was 10. The others were killed covering conflict or during high-risk assignments.
The number of journalists singled out for murder in reprisal for their work more than doubled in 2020.
At least 30 journalists were killed for their work as of December 15, 2020.
