Iowa elections: Full text of Rita Hart's petition to Congress

Democrat Rita Hart has filed a petition to take her bid for Iowa s 2nd Congressional District, the tightest race in the nation, to Congress.
Following a hand recount in November, a difference of six votes separates Hart from Republic Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Miller-Meeks victory in the district was certified by the state last month.
In her petition, Hart argues that 22 legally cast ballots were wrongfully excluded from November s recount a race-altering 15 of which were cast for her.
The petition alleges ballots that would have been in Hart s favor range from one instance of a misplaced signature to two voters who returned their ballots to the wrong county auditor s dropbox, causing their votes not to be counted by their respective counties election officials on time. ....

Rita Hart wants Congress to weigh in on Iowa's 2nd District race

Miller-Meeks says every legal ballot was counted in the race. But Hart believes voters deserve a full hand recount to consider the nearly 400,000 ballots cast in the race for voters intent.
While some of the district s precincts were recounted by hand in late November, many weren t. Iowa Code leaves such decisions to the 24 county recount boards, which are comprised of two members nominated from each campaign and a third member mutually agreed upon by the other two. Both campaigns have complained over the extent to which these boards pursued recounts fairly or legally.
This recount process was full of a lot of inconsistencies, Hart said in an interview at the Press-Citizen s office earlier this week. Votes were not looked at. The process was not consistent across the district. There are a lot of votes out there that did not get examined. ....

Elections: Rita Hart asks Congress to investigate Iowa race

The Iowa Democrat who lost the race for the state s 2nd Congressional District seat by only six votes has delivered her formal challenge to the U.S. House of Representatives. The race is the tightest in the nation, split with the Republican in the lead 196,964 to 196,958.
On Tuesday, Rita Hart delivered her petition to the Democrat-controlled House Committee on Administration, calling for an investigation on two counts: one, that 22 legally cast ballots were unlawfully excluded, and two, that the 24 counties recount boards procedures were irregular across the district.
Everyone has acknowledged that there are uncounted votes left and, after reviewing those ballots and making sure they are counted, it will be clear that I have won this election, Hart said in a release. It is crucial to me to make sure that this bipartisan review by the U.S. House is fair. Iowans deserve to know that the candidate who earned the most votes is seated. ....

On Wednesday, Community Connection, Iowa City s city-run talk show, went live as usual with Mayor Bruce Teague left of the frame.
Never one to miss an opportunity for something awesome and amazing, Teague was dressed for the occasion: red pants and a red long sleeve shirt trimmed in printed white fur. Mister Claus outfit was complete with a floppy red hat.
Hopefully, most people are skipping the big family gatherings and traveling, but there is plenty of ways to get into the holiday spirit, Teague said to the camera.
With the COVID-19 vaccine still months away from widespread distribution, Teague suggested families take in the holiday lights competition at Lucas Farms, offered some history on Christmas decorations around town and how to find light displays near you. ....
