SPRINGFIELD Two new Democratic Senators were sworn in Saturday to fill vacancies in the Illinois General Assembly.
Doris Turner, a former Springfield City Council member, and Mike Simmons, former policy director for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, are also the two newest members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.

The two Democratic appointments to the Senate follow the recent selections of Adriane Johnson, Cristina Pacione-Zayas and Sally Turner to vacancies in the 30th, 20th and 44th Senate Districts, respectively. They ve replaced retiring senators through appointments from party officials. ....

Democrats in the 48
th District have selected a replacement for former Senator Andy Manar. Springfield alderwoman Doris Turner was chosen to fill the remainder of Manar’s term, which just began as he resigned just a few days after being sworn in to another term last month. Manar is now working for Governor JB Pritzker.
Turner was chosen unanimously on Saturday during a meeting of the 48
th Legislative District Committee from a field of eight finalists. Turner has been on the Springfield City Council since 2011 and before that served for 10 years on the Sangamon County Board. She is officially retired after working for the state of Illinois, including 22 years with the Illinois Department of Public Health. Turner was the first African American to chair the Sangamon County Democratic Party and the first African American to be elected to the executive board of the Illinois County Chairmen’s Assoc ....

SPRINGFIELD Doris Turner, a Springfield alderwoman, has been chosent to succeed former state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, to represent the 48th Legislative District.
Manar resigned his state senate seat to take a senior advisor’s post with Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The 48th State Senate District stretches from the east side of Springfield to Decatur then heads south to include Christian and Montgomery counties and portions of Macoupin and northern Madison counties.
Last month the selection committee named eight finalists for his replacement, including Macoupin County Board Member Roberta Vojas. The 48th Legislative District Committee met Saturday to discuss the post and voted unanimously to appoint Turner to fill the remainder of Manar’s Illinois Senate term. ....

Names begin to emerge to replace Manar in Illinois Senate
With Andy Manar’s resignation from the Illinois Senate taking effect Sunday, the process to find his replacement has officially begun.
But discussions over who might fill Manar’s seat have been ongoing in political circles ever since the announcement of the three-term senator’s early departure for a senior role in Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration two weeks ago.
Possible candidates that have emerged include Springfield Ward 3 Ald. Doris Turner, who is also the Sangamon County Democratic Party chair; Springfield Park District board member Lisa Badger; former Springfield Ward 2 Ald. Frank McNeil; Chase Wilhelm, an Army reservist who ran unsuccessfully against state Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Morrisonville, in 2020; Decatur Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe; and Macoupin County board member Roberta Vojas. ....
