Gov. Brian Kemp had until Monday, 40 days since the close of the 2021 General Assembly session, to decide whether to sign or veto the bills the legislature passed. The most controversial bill of the session, the state’s new election law, was signed within an hour of its passage in March, but the legislature was busy passing other bills this year as well. 
Kemp vetoed one bill that would have created a “chief labor officer” within the Department of Labor who would have reported to the state legislature. This was a hot-button issue during the legislative session as a backlog of unemployment claims frustrated jobless Georgians and the lawmakers they appealed to for help.  ....

Landmark Christian School senior Sammie McGurl has been named the school’s 2021 STAR Student. Peter Chatel, Principal in
The Chatel Consulting Group, the local STAR program sponsor from the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Group, announced the honor Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at a virtual breakfast “banquet” held in honor of all Fulton county schools STAR award winners. McGurl selected Mark Hossler, AP Physics teacher at Landmark Christian School, as her STAR Teacher.
Sammie, the daughter of Susan and Danny (
dec. 2005) McGurl of Peachtree City, earned the recognition for achieving the highest score in her class on a single test date on the SAT and in the top 10 (or 10%) students of the class based on GPA.  Sammie is excited to be following in her father’s footsteps – as Danny McGurl, also received the STAR Student award at McIntosh HS in Peachtree City in 1989.  She plans to attend the Univers ....

When Metter High School Senior Matt Jordan was called to the school to meet with the principal, he wondered what was going on. 
As a dual-enrolled student at Georgia Southern and a work-based learning participant, Matt has had no classes on the MHS campus during his senior year, so he was really confused as to why he had been summoned. 
He walked in and saw MHS Principal Ellis Strobridge with a serious look on his face. 
Matt thought to himself, “OK, what have I done?”
After a few moments, Strobridge broke into a grin and told the young man that he was being named the STAR student for the MHS Class of 2021!  ....
