Swalwell Joins the Call for Pregnancy Health Coverage

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has joined 38 other Democratic members of Congress in asking that the Department of Health and Human Services issue guidance that federally funded and administered health insurers must cover all pregnancy and pregnancy-related services, including maternity care for dependents.
“It would be illogical and contrary to the [Affordable Care Act] to require coverage of some costs, including prenatal care, but not the most significant costs, including those for labor and delivery,” the members said in a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra
“We applaud the Biden Administration’s work to expand access to healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic,” they said. “We urge you to continue your work and issue further guidance that all costs related to pregnancy should be covered for insured individuals’ dependent children.” ....

COVID-19 in pregnancy does not significantly increase respiratory illness in newborns, says study

A new study published in the journal
JAMAoffers reassuring evidence that infants born to mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), or even asymptomatic infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), have little increase in respiratory symptoms over babies born to uninfected mothers.
Evidence of the virus has been found in placental and fetal membrane tissue in the form of genetic material (ribonucleic acid or RNA). Though the infection itself does not seem to be transmitted to the infant before birth, it may happen in the post-natal period. ....

Low risk of infection in babies born to mothers with COVID-19

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet and the Public Health Agency of Sweden have studied newborn babies whose mothers tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy or childbirth. The results show that although babies born of test-positive mothers are more likely to be born early, extremely few were infected with COVID-19. The study, which is published in the esteemed journal JAMA, supports the Swedish recommendation not to separate mother and baby after delivery. ....
