Iceland has just completed the world’s largest pilot project trialling the four-day week, involving more than 2,000 workers. This experiment has proved successful, and has reignited the debate surrounding a measure that has long been advocated as a way of increasing employee well-being and productivity. But what’s the state of affairs in other countries?
Working less, but better, by switching to a four-day week. The idea may not be new, but it has been in the news again in recent days, with all eyes on Iceland. This northern country has just unveiled the results of a large pilot study conducted between 2015 and 2019 among 1% of the Icelandic population. World's largest ever four day week trial in Iceland 'overwhelming success'


The world’s largest ever trial of a four-day working week and reduced working time in Iceland was an “overwhelming success” and should be tested in the UK, researchers have said.
More than 1 per cent of Iceland’s working population took part in the pilot programme which cut the working week to 35-36 hours with no reduction in overall pay.
Joint analysis by think tanks in Iceland and the UK found that the trials, which ran from 2015 to 2019 and involved more than 2,500 people, boosted productivity and wellbeing and are already leading to permanent changes.
Icelandic trade union federations, which collectively negotiate wages and conditions for most Icelandic employees, have already begun to negotiate reduced working hours as a result. ....

Microsoft Japan boosted productivity by 40 percent by switching to a four-day work week
Compared to a year prior, sales per employee in August 2019 were found to be 40 percent higher, while total working days were down 25.4 percent.
Trials of a four-day work week held in Iceland were deemed an overwhelming success by researchers in a new report. 
Iceland conducted two large-scale trials involving over 2,500 workers, which is about 1% of Iceland s entire working-age population. Participants were from a wide range of workplaces, including offices, hospitals, schools and social service providers. Participants in the trials worked 35-36 hours per week with no cut in pay.  ....
