New York City voters’ first major tryout of ranked-choice voting may be over, but now the work of tallying votes – including absentee ballots still yet to be returned – begins. As of late Tuesday night, few of the more than 300 candidates in three dozen open City Council districts were decisively declaring victory or conceding defeat.
While Council Members Carlina Rivera, Rafael Salamanca Jr. and Farah Louis were a few of the Democrats to face primaries as incumbents, those challenges weren’t particularly competitive and each of the incumbents swon easy victories. New York state assembly passes bill that would create gender-neutral marker on state identification

A New York bill that would allow people to use a gender-neutral X as a gender marker on driver s licenses and birth certificates passed the New York State Assembly on Thursday and now goes to the governor for final approval.
The Gender Recognition Act, which previously passed the state Senate, would also allow New Yorkers to attest to their own gender identity when petitioning a court or updating an identification document, and no longer requires medical evidence. The bill would also eliminate the requirement to publish name changes in a local newspaper, according to the text of the bill. ....

New York Gov. Cuomo Signs Bill That Automatically Restores Felons' Right to Vote After Release

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill expanding felon voting rights on Tuesday, according to the state legislature, allowing for people on parole in the state to be eligible to vote as soon as they leave prison.
The law codifies a 2018 executive order that allowed for Cuomo to individually pardon parolees. According to the bill text, Department of Corrections officials are required to provide a voter registration form as the felon is leaving the facility. Previously, parolees would have to wait a period of four to six weeks to receive a pardon and then must register to vote on their own. ....
