A Wrangell resident who recently traveled outside of Alaska has tested positive for COVID-19, city officials announced Thursday evening.
The case is one of three known active cases in town.
Wrangell officials say the individual is asymptomatic and is isolating.
Wrangell has no mask ordinance in place at this time, but local officials still encourage mask-wearing in indoor, public spaces.
For Wrangellites without COVID symptoms, testing is available daily at the airport during jet arrivals. Anyone with symptoms or other COVID questions can call the Wrangell Medical Center at 874-7000. ....

This article has been updated to clarify that almost half of the state’s eligible population has been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Southeast Alaska’s tribal health consortium is encouraging children as young as 12 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
That’s because the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) says they expect the Pfizer vaccine to be authorized for emergency use for kids over 12 very soon.
Alaska officials have echoed that expectation. On a statewide call last month, Department of Health and Social Services officials said they believe the authorization will come by the end of this month, at the latest. ....

A Wrangell resident who recently traveled outside of Alaska has tested positive for COVID-19, city officials announced Thursday evening.

Wrangell has a mask ordinance in place for indoor, public spaces. That mandate expires tomorrow (Friday, April 30).

And people 16 and older wanting to get vaccinated against COVID-19 can sign up to receive a vaccine at covid19.searhc.org. ....

More than a third (around 36%) of Wrangell’s population has signed up for the COVID-19 vaccine. That’s according to the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium which runs the community’s hospital.
SEARHC has administered 544 doses of COVID vaccine in Wrangell. That includes some second doses. The tribal health organization did not provide information about how many
people have been vaccinated to date.
SEARHC spokesperson Maegan Bosak said in an email that as of Wednesday afternoon, 917 people in Wrangell had signed up for the vaccine. Some have already received their initial dose. ....
