South Africa CHPC s Lengau supercomputer and OpenStack Production Cloud are redefining their path forward for computational resources. Courtesy of the University of South Africa. Read Time: The South Africa Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) has joined the ranks of HPC centers who are converging their supercomputing and cloud infrastructures. The 1.3 petaFLOPS Lengau supercomputer has been the fastest machine on the continent. Adding its OpenStack Production Cloud in early 2020 allowed users to begin taking advantage of orchestrated general purpose computing and storage resources. But, when South Africa went into lockdown on March 26, 2020, due to COVID-19, the countryâs computing needs vastly outgrew the resources provided by Lengau and the OpenStack Production Cloud. ....
April 21, 2021 at 12:00 pm Astronomers have been arguing about the rate of the universe’s expansion for nearly a century. A new independent method to measure that rate could help cast the deciding vote. For the first time, astronomers calculated the Hubble constant the rate at which the universe is expanding from observations of cosmic flashes called fast radio bursts, or FRBs. While the results are preliminary and the uncertainties are large, the technique could mature into a powerful tool for nailing down the elusive Hubble constant, researchers report April 12 at arXiv.org. Ultimately, if the uncertainties in the new method can be reduced, it could help settle the long-standing debate that holds our understanding of the universe’s physics in the balance ( ....
Recent research has revealed that Venus might have looked like Earth for three billion years, with vast oceans that could have been friendly to life leading to recent speculation that it may have been the first life-bearing planet. A conjecture spurred by the announcement in September of 2020 by an international group of researchers reported in the journal Nature Astronomy, that there may be a whiff of life in the famously inhospitable planet’s atmosphere in the form of traces of phosphine, a gas that is associated with life where there is no oxygen. Plenty of time for evolution to kick in ....
ESOblog 8 March 2021 How Catherine’s different leadership roles have shaped her perspective of science. What were Catherine’s most memorable moments as Director General of ESO. What Catherine is most looking forward to in the future of astronomy. In celebration of International Women’s Day, we spoke to Catherine Cesarsky, who was ESO Director General between 1999 and 2007. Since then, she has taken on a number of prestigious leadership roles including President of the International Astronomical Union and High Commissioner for Atomic Energy in France. We find out how she got into astrophysics, about her most recent leadership role and what she is looking forward to in the future. ....
