Cocaine Bear: The True Story Behind the Ultimate Party Animal

Bearpacker is Backpacker’s annual celebration of bear safety, science, and stories.
The story of Cocaine Bear starts with a body in a driveway.
Andrew Carter Thornton II had been a paratrooper, a police officer, and a lawyer before turning to drug smuggling, moving loads of cocaine into the U.S. from Colombia in his Cessna 404. That ended on September 11, 1985, when police discovered Thornton’s dead body in a driveway in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was heavily armed, wearing a bulletproof vest, and carrying thousands of dollars in cash and about 77 pounds of cocaine (later valued at around $14 million) in a duffel bag strapped around his waist. He had apparently died when his parachute failed to open after he jumped from his plane, which authorities later discovered about 60 miles away and identified using a key found on Thornton’s body. Thornton had directed the aircraft toward the Atlantic Ocean and set it to autopilot before making his ill-fated jump. ....

Searching for Monster Trout on Georgia's Soque River – Garden & Gun

I could tell you
I find so alluring.
In the headwaters, cornfields in the valleys nudge against sycamores and mountain laurel as the river, here little more than a creek, twists through banks clad in vine and wildflowers. Farther downstream, it gathers flow from limestone springs, and its rock-ribbed pools are cooled in the shade of soaring hemlock groves. The Soque River (pronounced so-
quee) flows for about thirty miles contained in a single county Habersham, merely four counties northeast of metro Atlanta an intimacy that lends it a homey, winsome, tucked-just-out-of-sight appeal.
But I’d be lying if I said I’m here for the river or the repasts spread on split-log farm tables or the end-of-day cocktails lit by a sun setting over wild, timbered ridgelines. ....

History, memory, nature: Chuang explores the Asian American experience through poetry

In virtual reality, I transform my dorm space into a home away from home with picture collages, amusing laptop stickers and letters from loved ones posted on my wall.

I arrive at the cabin in Ellijay, Georgia, where I worked on my thesis in September 2020. In the backyard, I see dozens of ancient trees; those trees are a portal into a different world, connected with generations of Southern families and forest creatures.

As part of the editing process, I hand-edit each poem because it is easier for me to find typos or grammatical errors. Under advice from my adviser, I also print out each poem to place them thematically on my wall. I move them around into different groupings as I envision my poetry manuscript s overall framework. ....

Set along a shallow stretch of the Tennessee River in the northwestern corner of Alabama, the communities of Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia are known collectively as the Shoals. Early American Indian inhabitants referred to the Tennessee as the “singing river,” which would prove fitting. Alongside it, centuries later, a rich musical culture would emerge, as two studios, FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound, drew the greatest musicians of the sixties and seventies and established the area as the “Hit Recording Capital of the World.”
And while the Shoals also lays claim to the birthplaces of W.C. Handy (known as the “Father of the Blues”) and rock and roll pioneer Sam Phillips (founder of legendary Sun Studio), the creative culture of the area extends beyond music. From the Rosenbaum House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in Alabama, to the flagship store of fashion designer Billy Reid, to acclaimed restaurant Odette, artistic excel ....
