LANE COUNTY, Ore. The new guidelines for mask wearing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allow fully vaccinated people to go without wearing a mask in public. However, the state of Oregon has not released specific guidelines for businesses to follow at this time.

Election preview: 7 candidates vie for 3 seats on Eugene 4J School Board

All three of Eugene School Board s seats up for election this year are contested, with seven candidates appearing on the ballot.
Most of the candidates are newcomers, with the exception of sole incumbent Judy Newman. Whoever wins each of the seats will hold it for a full four-year term.
The Register-Guard sent all the candidates a questionnaire that asked about relevant experience, reasons for running and plans to make schools more inclusive. Here s a bit more about each of the candidates, based on their responses.
Since filing, Dakota James Boulette, 22, decided to stop campaigning and instead is supporting Maya Rabasa for the seat. However, Boulette s name still will appear on the ballot. Candidate Bryan Costa did not return multiple calls for comment. ....

EUGENE, Ore. – Police are investigating after multiple suspicious dumpster fires Sunday night.
Just before 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of West 11th Avenue and Seneca Road after the fires were reported at two different Lane Transit District bus stops.
While officers were in the area, they saw smoke and fire coming from the area of the Dollar Tree, 3630 West 11th Ave. Eugene Springfield Fire arrived to the scene and put the fire out. Fire officials confirmed the fire started in the area of a dumpster next to the store and spread to surrounding trees. ....

As we reach Earth Day 2021, we might be feeling as if climate change is about impending doom and contentious political battles.
Last year’s deadly wildfires sent shockwaves through communities all over the West, crushing communities and shaking our sense of security for coming fire seasons, and many observers rightly linked increasing wildfire risk to changing climate. At the same time, the Biden administration has made serious action on climate a top priority, rejoining the international accord known as the Paris Agreement and pledging large climate-savvy investments in infrastructure.
Yet at the local level, action on climate change doesn’t have to be about fear and politics. We have climate action opportunities here, in the Eugene-Springfield area, that also support economic efficiency and social equity. ....
