The body of a famed endurance athlete has been found near the summit of a peak in Yosemite National Park days after he went missing, authorities said Thursday.
Fred Zalokar, 61, of Reno, Nev. was reported missing a day after a solo day hike July 17 to Mount Clark, a popular peak for for mountaineers. His body was found Tuesday.
Zalokar hiked from Happy Isles to the summit using an off-trail route from Bunnell Point in Little Yosemite Valley, the National Park Service said in a statement. ....

A champion distance runner was found dead in Yosemite National Park after failing to return from a weekend hike, the National Park Service said. The body of Fred Zalokar, 61, of Reno, Nevada, was found and recovered on Tuesday near the summit of Mount Clark, a statement said.
According to the park, Zalokar was day hiking on July 17, from Happy Isles to the summit of 11,522-foot Mount Clark using an off-trail route from Bunnell Point. He had planned to return to Yosemite Valley.
This incident remains under investigation. No additional information is available. Our condolences to his family and friends, the park statement said. ....

Yosemite, CA An accomplished athlete who went missing over the weekend in Yosemite National Park has been found dead.
61-year-old Fred Zalokar of Reno went hiking this past Saturday from Happy Isles to the summit of Mount Clark (11,522 feet). His body was recovered yesterday near the top of Mount Clark, according to the National Park Service.
The federal agency notes that the incident remains under investigation and no further details are being released at this time.
We reported earlier that he was using an off-trail route to reach Mount Clark from Bunnell Point. Zalokar had won ultra-marathon races on multiple continents, visited 137 countries and climbed 185 mountains. ....
