Troy native publishes book on his running career


TROY, N.Y. — Troy native and standout runner Tom Bulger recently published a book about his running career.
“A Runner s Memories, Dreams, Reflections,” published by The Troy Book Makers, represents the author’s 40 years of writing about distance running.
As a runner and coach himself, Bulger has compiled different topics and stories of interest to distance runners. The book includes descriptions of various races, local, national, and international; brief portraits of a variety of distance runners; advice about training and recovering from injury; and a host of other issues relating to distance running.

The overarching purpose of the book, Bulger said, is how distance running remarkably parallels one’s existence and is a metaphor for an individual’s life. ....

Justice Center of Rensselaer County announces discussion on issues of systemic racism


TROY, N.Y. — Douglas A. Blackmon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II, will be the featured speaker at a webinar to be hosted by the Justice Center of Rensselaer County on March 25 at 7 p.m. The event is part of the JCRC’s on-going work to address systemic racism.
Published in 2008, Slavery by Another Name documents the use of the justice system to conscript Black men into unpaid labor for white-owned enterprises for decades after the Civil War. Using original documents, this ground-breaking work traces the lives of specific individuals and families to shine a light on an unseen, troubling past. A documentary film based on the book attracted more than 5 million viewers to its first broadcasts on PBS and has been rebroadcast thousands of times since then. ....

Author Cari Scribner is one of those people who refuse to give up. She has wanted to be a writer since she was in third grade when her teacher at Blue Creek Elementary School, part of the North Colonie School District, told her she wrote the best essays in the class. “That teacher took me aside and said I was going to be a writer,” said Scribner. “I believed her. She was my teacher.”
She eventually attended The College of Saint Rose where she majored in journalism and minored in creative writing. “While there I wrote everything, a screenplay, haikus, even advertising copy. The writing classes were very specific, but I found the conciseness of journalism to be my calling.” ....
