Kelly visits local venues, hopes federal funding will open them soon

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz) visited the Rialto Theatre this week to highlight federal funding designed to get local music venues open again.
The federal government allocated more than $16.2 billion to the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant for live venues, live performing arts organizations, museums and movie theatres, as well as live venue promoters, theatrical producers and talent representatives.
But when the Small Business Administration opened the portal for the first-come, first-serve program on April 8, the demand crashed the system. Two weeks later, Kelly and Sen. Call of Duty: Biden taps Tucson Police Chief Magnus to head up Customs and Border Protection


Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus is President Joe Biden’s pick to oversee Customs and Border Protection in President Joe Biden’s administration.
“I am, of course, very honored to be nominated by the President to lead Customs and Border Protection,” Magnus said. “I look forward to speaking with senators and hearing their thoughts and concerns.”
City officials said Magnus is an ideal choice because of his progressive efforts to promote community policing and his recent work managing the police force in Tucson, a city close to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Chief Magnus has always understood the importance of distinguishing the role of local law enforcement from federal immigration enforcement and how critical this is to protecting community trust,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero in a statement on Monday. “He has gained valuable experience serving as police chief of a major city here in the borderlands.” ....

City of Tucson to host community session to discuss violence against Asians

TUCSON (KVOA) - Since the pandemic began, reports of violence against the Asian community in the United States have seen a drastic increase.
To help Tucsonans voice their concerns and hopefully curb local incidents, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and other city leaders are holding a virtual listening session on Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
According to city officials, the University of Arizona Pacific American Advisory Council members and Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American community members will be moderating this community conversation.
