Hardin-Houston Board of Education hosts organizational meeting HOUSTON – The Hardin-Houston Local School Board of Education held regular and organizational board meetings on Jan. 11. During the regular meeting, the board employed Deb Smith as a teacher under the 21st Century Grant for the 2020-21 school year and employed Beth Shaffer as the assistant varsity softball coach for the 2020-21 school year. The board also approved all treasurer recommendations. During the organizational meeting, the board elected Christine Helman as president of the Board of Education for 2021 and elected Jason Shaffer as vice president for 2021. It approved $3,000 for the Board Service Fund for 2021 and also adopted the rate of $50 per meeting, not to exceed 15 meetings per calendar year. ....
Scholarship applications open SIDNEY The 2021 Community Foundation of Shelby County scholarship applications are now open at commfoun.com. The online applications are the gateway to 60 local scholarship funds awarding nearly $300,000. Some scholarships provide a one-time award, while others are renewable. “High school seniors, current college students and adults returning to school may qualify for one or more scholarships,” said Juli Smith, Community Foundation scholarships and grants administrator. “In addition to scholarships for those pursuing an Associates or Bachelors degree, we are again offering several scholarships for students enrolling in trade or technical schools. Shelby County residents have created these scholarships to help a wide range of students better afford an education.” ....
Community grants application open until Jan. 21 SIDNEY The spring 2020 Community Grant application window is open, making $55,000 available to local organizations from the Community Foundation of Shelby County. The deadline for the online preliminary proposal submission is Jan. 21. Community Grant awards may go to any 501(c)(3) organization or governmental entity in or serving Shelby County. Fall grant awards supported medical care and training equipment Anna Rescue, GIVE Medical Ministry and the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA, education efforts sponsored by the Shelby County Historical Society and Shelby Soil & Water Conservation District, an accessibility ramp for New Choices and many other efforts. Community Foundation distributes $467,000 SIDNEY More than $467,000 was distributed to 18 participating charities Friday from proceeds of Match Day, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Shelby County. The amount exceeded the 2019 total by $90,000. Match Day was held on December 1 and, after processing nearly 1,400 gifts, results were announced to each organization on Friday. The event celebrated the local foundation’s fundraising campaign on Giving Tuesday by giving away $90,000 in matching money. Matches of up to $5,000 were offered to 501(c)(3) charities that had an organization fund within the Community Foundation. The awards were not placed into the fund at the Community Foundation, but instead were given to the charities to be put to work on their projects and needs. ....
