Today, Yurok Connect launched a new program that will provide free digital devices and a
substantial discount on monthly internet bills to eligible customers on the Yurok Reservation.
The Federal Communications Commission recently approved Yurok Connect to establish an
Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program. The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program will
offer eligible Yurok Reservation households a reduction of up to $75 per month on monthly
internet bills. All qualified participants will also be offered a Wi-Fi-capable Android tablet. These ....

Long haul to broadband finish line

Gila Countyâs Homero Vela, assistant county manager, has worked for the last 18 months with partners on a strategic plan for broadband throughout Gila County. Partners in the project include Kimley-Horn, EntryPoint Networks and BPG Designs.
The group has been pulling together data, including possible costs. Vela and various partners provided the information to the Gila County Board of Supervisors at a March 30 work session, which included a two-hour presentation and a 44-slide PowerPoint program.
Vela stressed to the board that it could take up to five years to get a reliable and cost-effective broadband system in place. Once in place, it is at least a 50-year infrastructure improvement. ....

A startup called Alaska Tribal Spectrum received a $100,000 grant from the Denali Commission to register as many Alaska Native Tribes during the final months of last year’s application period. The initiative has signed up nearly 70 Tribes.
“We created a website and an application process to make it very, very simple to join a consortium application and get as many people, as many Tribes to grab a hold of for this free asset before, before the window closed,” said Jim Berlin who heads the Kenai-based nonprofit.
Because when it does close, any unclaimed broadband licenses will go to auction to private carriers. Berlin said it was a big push to get rural Tribes with poor internet to enroll on their website. Some faxed applications, others mailed in handwritten submissions. ....

Alaska Native tribes are awaiting word on scores of wireless broadband licenses offered at no charge by the Federal Communications Commission. It’s part of a federal push to improve internet access in traditionally underserved communities.

Supervisors hear request for county mask mandate

The Washington County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8 opened with the submission of an approximate 250-signature petition from Washington County nursing facilities asking the board to institute a county mask mandate immediately.
Presented during the public comment segment, the package given to the board contained the petitions as well as letters from the facilities’ administrators, including from Kalona’s Pleasantview Home, asking for help to protect the most vulnerable populations in the county.
The letters outline all precautions taken that include no outside visitors, keeping residents in their rooms, no communal dining, no group gatherings and no family visitors. Even with all precautions observed, there have been deaths at the facilities, the board was told. ....
