Washington County beats Multnomah County in Lower Risk application

Multnomah County officials said they could not submit their plan for closing the vaccination gap in time.
Multnomah and Washington counties split over applying to be moved quickly into the Lower Risk pandemic restriction categories authorized by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown.
Both counties are close to meeting the standard Brown announced on Wednesday that 65% of residents 16 and older must have received their first COVID-19 vaccination.
Washington County applied to move out of the more restrictive High Risk category by also submitting a plan to the Oregon Health Authority to close the vaccination gap between ethnic groups. If approved, the county could be classified as Lower Risk on Friday, May 21. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Nine-day MAX disruption begins Saturday


The TriMet project to improve Blue Line service will last until Sunday, May 23.
TriMet MAX riders need to plan ahead because crews will begin making rail improvements in Northeast Portland starting on Saturday, May 15.
MAX Blue, Green and Red lines will be disrupted and no trains will be running between Northeast 7th Avenue and the Gateway Transit Center from Saturday, through Sunday, May 23.
Impacts will also be felt elsewhere, with no Green or Red line trains running west of the Gateway Transit Center.
During the project, shuttle buses will be serving stations between Northeast 7th Avenue and the Gateway Transit Center. Due to the length of the route, riders should plan an extra 30 minutes for their trips, or, if possible, use alternative means of transportation if traveling through that area. ....

The Multnomah County Commission approved plans for a new 42-bed mental health shelter, as well as 20 beds of transitional housing.
More than 60 people suffering from mental health issues will have space to recover off the streets when a new center for behavioral health opens in downtown Portland in fall 2022, leaders say.
The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners tied a bow on the blueprints for the 24,000-square-foot facility, which now has an approved price tag of $26 million, during a virtual meeting on Thursday, May 13.
The Behavioral Health Resource Center is not a crisis center, said Julie Dodge, who was appointed the county s interim behavioral health director in January. It s the place where we can encourage someone to go to get the next step of resources, after stabilization at an emergency room. ....

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer and state Rep. Ricki Ruiz have added their voices in support of civics education in Oregon high schools.
Blumenauer, a Democrat from Oregon s 3rd District, is sponsoring the USA Civics Act to provide $1 billion in federal grants to encourage Oregon and other states to require civics education.
Ruiz, a Democrat from Gresham who also is on the Reynolds School Board, sits on the House Education Committee, where a Senate-passed bill to require one semester of civics education (SB 513) is pending. ....

UPDATE: Portland police identify the woman killed near Cathedral Park as a TriMet driver.
Two people were wounded and another two killed as Portland Police Bureau and Gresham Police Department officers responded to four shootings across the city on Wednesday, May 5.
Portland police have identified the woman killed near Cathedral Park as Breauna White, 30, a TriMet driver.
Our hearts go out to Bre and her family, TriMet said in a Thursday statement. She was a valued bus operator and will be missed by her co-workers and the entire TriMet team.
The four separate shootings began just after midnight and continued into the afternoon hours, authorities say. There is no indication the incidents are linked, PPB spokesman Greg Pashley told Pamplin Media. ....
