Healthcare staff who have worked through the coronavirus crisis should have a similar mental health service as that offered to war veterans, a group of leading medical organisations has said.
The pandemic has had a “huge impact” on a workforce that has already been stretched thin, according to the 13 healthcare organisations which have come together to call on the Government to make sure there is a dedicated mental health support service similar to that established for former troops. ....

For decades and until relatively recently, musculoskeletal disorders have been the principal cause of nurses’ sickness absence in the UK.
I trained as a nurse in the era that first recognised the damage being done to nurses’ health and wellbeing by back injuries.
From our very first day as student nurses, there was a real discipline in the way we were taught about the dangers of poor lifting techniques as part of a strategy to protect us from being the next generation of casualties of back injuries. Now mental health problems have overtaken back injuries to become the principal cause of nurses’ sickness absence. ....
