KINGSTON Author and city archaeologist Joseph Bagley will close out the Spring Author Talks series at 7 p.m. May 13 via Zoom with his book, “Boston’s Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them.”
Boston has some old buildings and as it approaches its 400th anniversary, it still maintains its historic character despite constant development. In “Boston’s Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them,” Bagley features 50 buildings that all pre-date 1800 and illustrate the city’s early history. This is the first book to survey Boston’s 50 oldest buildings and does so through an approachable narrative which will appeal to history lovers, architectural enthusiasts and tourists alike. ....

When Rebecca Graff, a Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago in need of a dissertation, was told by a professor that the view before them, from the school’s Ida Noyes Hall, was “a hundred years ago the center of the world,” she saw more than the bucolic splendor of Jackson Park hugging the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Instead, her sights went to what lay beneath — evidence of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, an unexcavated but huge part of Chicago’s history. Held in celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arrival in the New World, the exposition attracted 27 million people, who paid $21.5 million for admission in a six-month period. ....

UPenn professor retires after facing backlash for using Nazi salute

A professor at the University of Pennsylvania resigned this week after stirring a controversy by using a Nazi salute and expression during a virtual conference.
Robert Schuyler, an associate professor of anthropology and associate curator-in-charge of the historical archaeology section at the Penn Museum, retired on Monday, according to a statement from the university. The move came after the school canceled his scheduled courses for the spring semester amid a review.
Steven Fluharty, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, condemned the “abhorrent conduct.”

“Such behavior has no place in our academic discourse, which aims to celebrate the open exchange of ideas in an environment that promotes civility, respect, and inclusion,” Fluharty said. “Nazi symbols are antithetical to our values as an institution. Earlier this month, Robert Schuyler, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), sparked a storm of criticism when he used a Nazi salute and phrase during the plenary session of the Society for Historical Archaeology’s (SHA’s) annual meeting. Yesterday afternoon, UPenn updated a statement about the incident, saying Schuyler has retired from the university.
