Missing & Murdered Unit created for American Indians, Alaska Natives justice

WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced April 2 the formation of a Missing & Murdered Unit within the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services to provide leadership and direction for cross-departmental and interagency work involving missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.
According to the BIA, the MMU will help put the full weight of the federal government into investigating these cases and marshal law enforcement resources across federal agencies and throughout Indian country.
“Violence against Indigenous peoples is a crisis that has been underfunded for decades. Far too often, murders and missing persons cases in Indian Country go unsolved and unaddressed, leaving families and communities devastated,” said Haaland. “The new MMU unit will provide the resources and leadership to prioritize these cases and coordinate resources to hold people accountable, ....

Penn State APIDA Caucus, NAACP chapter demand university response to hate speech

Penn State’s NAACP chapter posted a letter Monday on its Instagram demanding the university address hate toward its Asian community.
The letter said an Indian international student encountered hate speech and racial slurs from another Penn State student on Sunday. The time and location of the incident was not shared in the post.
Penn State’s NAACP and APIDA, or Asian Pacifier Islander Desi American, Caucus are urging the university and the community to “take tangible steps toward addressing these acts of hate,” according to the post.
The post said Penn State “profits” off of its minority student attendance, but doesn’t “provide adequate resources and responses to support minority students, especially when addressing acts of racism.” ....

LDS leaders decry abortion as 'evil,' call out racism

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decried abortion as evil and issued another plea for members to combat prejudice and racism during a church conference that took place last weekend without attendees because of the pandemic.
The faith has long opposed abortion, but addressed it only sparingly in recent years.
Citing a speech by former church President Gordon B. Hinckley from a 1998 conference, church leader Neil Andersen said abortion is “evil, stark and real and repugnant” and pleaded with women to avoid considering it.

“Let us share our deep feelings about the sanctity of life with those who make decisions in society,” Andersen said. “They may not fully appreciate what we believe, but we pray that they will more fully understand why, for us, these decisions go well beyond just what a person wants for his or her own life.” ....

Hollifield: Where Ramona the Pest meets Gus the Ranger

In the afterlife of art and literature, in the sweet by and by, I imagine retired Texas Ranger Gus McRae on the porch of the celestial ranch house teasing Ramona the Pest and whistling for that old dog Ribsy to run the pigs out of the yard.
Two literary giants, Beverly Cleary and Larry McMurtry, died on the same day, March 25, 2021.
Cleary was 104. During her career, she sold more than 90 million copies of her books, most of which chronicled the adventures of Ramona (the Pest) Quimby, her big sister Beezus, Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy.
McMurtry was 84. The Pulitzer Prize-winner penned dozens of books, including “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment,” and the greatest western adventure ever written, “Lonesome Dove.” ....
