Jack Knox: Don't miss laundromats? Wait until you need one

After five years of trucking dirty duds off-island, they’re celebrating Salt Spring’s new laundromat today. Now, if only someone could find a home for one in downtown Victoria. Same goes for . . .

Letters May 13: School music still in danger; boundary changes a solution in search of a problem

Strings and choir, both incredibly popular programs among students, remain in danger of being completely eliminated. Roughly 70 per cent of Grade 5 students participate in strings when offered.
Choir is easily the most inclusive and cost-effective way to enrich students’ lives through music. Cutting such a program that boosts student mental health, especially now, is very misguided.
Teachers have even been told that they are not allowed to run strings or choir programs with the provided band funding, even if there are interested kids. It is arbitrarily cruel to students with these passions.
The school district has suggested that teachers volunteer their time to teach strings and choir. To ask them to run these complex and challenging programs in their free time, while in their new roles as general classroom teachers, is misguided at best, insulting at worst.

Cook Street Village condo project heads back to public hearing

Council rejected the project last year in a 4-4 tie, following a public hearing and a discussion about the best way to solve the city’s housing crisis, with councillors Ben Isitt, Jeremy Loveday, Sarah Potts and Sharmarke Dubow opposed to the project.
On Dec. 10, council reconsidered the decision and directed staff to work with the developer to address housing affordability.
The proposal has not changed from what came before council previously, a staff report says, but the developer indicated they intend make a charitable donation to support homeless youth ahead of a public hearing.
The eight councillors who previously voted on the project before a Dec. 12 byelection to fill a ninth seat on council maintained their positions Thursday. A vote in support by Coun. Stephen Andrew, who was elected in the byelection, pushed the overall vote to 5-4 in favour of going to another public hearing.

Unseasonably warm temperatures to stick around Vancouver Island deep into next week

VICTORIA --
We are in a much-needed and well-deserved stretch of unseasonably warm weather, making it feel almost like summertime here on Vancouver Island.
Hillary Quinn was at Cadboro Bay on Friday with her young son.
"It is absolutely spectacular," she told CTV News.
With temperatures hitting the low 20’s, peoples moods seem to be lifted.
"It’s like night and day, it’s unbelievable," said Tisha Textor, another mother at the beach with her young son.
You aren’t alone if you feel like we deserve this. Most islanders are appreciating the sun after emerging from a long, dark winter marked with pandemic restrictions.

Letters April 16: Better COVID rule enforcement; it's poisoning, not overdosing

Judith Millar
Vaccine’s danger vs. other risks we face
Like most residents in B.C. (or the world) I am an interested observer of the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations in B.C.
I agree with the initial age-based priorities for seniors, and the recently changed priorities to hotspots and front-line workers.
What is causing me most recent concern is the delay in vaccination due to what appears to be very rare issues of blood clot complications in an environment where people continue to die in much greater numbers from COVID due to this disease.
And in the meantime we are killing our economy and putting thousands, if not millions, of Canadians out of work.

Letters March 6: Beacon Hill Park occupation; is bigamy OK now?; work-at home woes

Repressive tolerance of Beacon Hill Park
When a minority take rights they do not have, such as occupying our heritage park, beheading a statue of the Queen and scaring away a majority of Victoria citizens from using what is left of our once-beautiful Beacon Hill Park, and the mayor and council doing nothing about it, they are practising what is called “repressive tolerance.”
Homeless people should be supported in our society, but not by taking away something so important in a city as a big, beautiful green area that is very loved and used by most Victorians.
