About 45 indigenous groups with an estimated population of three million have distinct languages and cultures
Bangladesh s indigenous languages are under threat and some could die without positive action to preserve them.
Catholic and ethnic community leaders have called on authorities to protect several indigenous languages that face extinction due to a lack of government support and community efforts.
The call was made as people, irrespective of faith and ethnicity in Bangladesh and across the globe, marked the United Nations-designated International Mother Language Day on Feb. 21.

International Mother Language Day 2021 has been celebrated at the UN headquarters.
The event was co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Jordan, Lithuania and New Zealand to the UN.
Organized for the 5th consecutive year, the event was also co-sponsored by the UN Secretariat and the UNESCO, according to a message received here on Tuesday (Feb 23).
Due to the COVID-19 related restrictions the event was held virtually and was telecast at the UN Web TV.
The President of the General Assembly Volkan Bozkir attended the event and delivered his remarks. ....

Dhaka, Feb 22 (IANS) Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that one can easily know the real history of the Language Movement of the country by reading the Pakistani intelligence branch reports from 1948 to 1971 which was made against Bangabandhu.
Hasina on Sunday said, We remember the sacrifice of the martyrs for the Bengali language on February 21, 1952. We observe the Martyrs Day and pay homage to the language martyrs on this day. At the same time, we respect all the language lovers around the world.
One-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the memories of the Language heroes while the immortal song on Amar Ekushey Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February was also played at the outset of the function. ....

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said the struggle for freedom had started through the Language Movement while it completed its journey with the attainment of independence when the nation won its victory.
“The blood of our martyrs did not go in vain and it’ll never be, and that is the proven truth. We gained our independence in exchange for the blood of millions of martyrs,” she said while virtually addressing a discussion meeting marking the Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day from her official residence Ganobhaban, reports UNB. ....
