Sir David to name baby gorilla at Kwita Izina 2006 in Rwanda

“If only we would collectively rise to mankind’s greatest challenge to restore what we unjustly borrowed in the name of civilization, the world would become a better place.” That was Sir David Attenborough’s key message as he chatted with a small group of distinguished guests at the Rwanda High Commission yesterday.
The veteran broadcaster and conservationist was invited by Her Excellency Yamina Karitanyi, the High Commissioner of Rwanda to the UK (in cooperation with the Rwanda Development Board), to visit the High Commission and name a newborn gorilla as part of this year’s Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony. While there, Sir David met with select guests to discuss conservation in Rwanda, his famous encounter with mountain gorillas there in 1978, and the special place these remarkable animals hold in the hearts of people all around the world. ....

Everyone at Fauna & Flora International (FFI) was devastated to hear the tragic news that six rangers in Virunga National Park – one of the last refuges of the endangered mountain gorilla – have been ambushed and killed by armed assailants, the second such deadly attack in the park within the past 12 months.
The region where mountain gorillas live has been plagued by instability for many decades, and few would deny that this beleaguered World Heritage site in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suffered disproportionately. Since its inception, the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) and the park authorities in the three range countries – DRC, Rwanda and Uganda – have been forced to operate against a backdrop of violent conflict, human tragedy and economic hardship.  ....

Mountain gorillas can catch human respiratory diseases like Covid-19.
There are around 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild, and about 460 of them live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. In the park’s very dense, high-altitude forest (hence the name “impenetrable”), veterinarian Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is working to keep them alive through the Covid-19 pandemic.
No gorilla has come down with Covid-19, but Kalema-Zikusoka fears what might happen if one did. Gorillas live in tight-knit groups, so a respiratory infection could easily spread among them. Infected gorillas could get sick and die, or possibly suffer long-term consequences from the disease. ....
