Gabriella Priest joins HKS as the new PCJ Program Director


We are thrilled to announce that
Gabriella Priest is joining Harvard Kennedy School’s Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management (PCJ) as Program Director, effective February 22nd.  For almost two decades, Priest has worked tirelessly to improve the penal system, partnering with practitioners, academics, policymakers, and impacted individuals and their families in research and evidenced-based practices to develop holistic approaches to penal system reform. She will join Sandra Susan Smith, PCJ Faculty Chair, to promote sound policy and effective management in the administration of safety and justice.
Before joining the PCJ as Program Director, Priest worked for 11 years at the nonprofit, Community Resources for Justice (CRJ). As CRJ’s Director of Innovation, Implementation, and Development, she oversaw its Massachusetts community-based reentry programs and its Social Justice Services training academy. Currently, federal statute prohibits any form of federal health coverage for incarcerated individuals except under very limited circumstances. In most states, Medicaid coverage is immediately terminated when someone is sent to a correctional setting. This creates a serious coverage gap when individuals are released, as they often have no access to health care or addiction treatment during a stressful and dangerous time. This bill is a bipartisan response to this issue, following alarming evidence published in the New England Journal of Medicine that individuals reentering society are 
129 times likelier than the general population to die of a drug overdose during the first two weeks after release. ....
