The doctor at the forefront of the local vaccine roll out has been awarded an humanitarian honour by the grandson of Nelson Mandela.
The distinguished Regal British Award was presented to Dr Agnelo Fernandes and the late Croydon Police officer Sgt Matt Ratana by Mandla Mandela MP for their exceptional leadership which has inspired others around the world. 
Dr Fernandes, who is the chair of NHS Croydon and a senior GP at the Parchmore Medical Centre, said he was: “humbled and honoured” to have received an award and “overwhelmed by distinguished and inspiring guests.”
Anthony Carmona, the fifth President of Trinidad and Tobago, launched and presented the Grand Saviours Award to Croydon NHS and Croydon Metropolitan Police for being compassionate in risking their own lives to save others. ....

Highlighting the human rights achievements in Bahrain is a priority in parliamentary diplomacy.
The focus should be on the comprehensive progress and development in human rights within the comprehensive development process of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
This was emphasised by Council of Representatives Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal during a virtual meeting with the parliament’s delegation to the 142nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and related meetings to be held online in May.
The Speaker praised the qualitative projects, initiatives and programmes in Bahrain to enhance the culture of human rights and to strengthen the efforts made by the government headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in support of human rights in various fields. ....

When did we lose that phrase, “human family”, to what we now so snappily call the “international community”? I was conjuring its many vibrant, tactile associations when, on the weekend of March 27, I came across an article in the Jamaica Gleaner where Prathit Misra, an Indian diplomat in Kingston, celebrates 175 years of the Indian community in Jamaica and quotes Bob Marley’s granddaughter Donisha Prendergast, as she recalls that “sharing energy with the sadhus (ascetics) on the riverbank in Varanasi (in India) was parallel to the experience of being with the Rastaman in Jamaica. There’s an old connection between these cultures: when Indian indentured labourers were brought to the Caribbean plantations, they brought with them ideas of spirituality, spices and the beautiful plant that would become a central part of the Rastafari culture.” ....
