Overcoming community-conservation conflict: Q&A with Dominique Bikaba
Kahuzi-Biega National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is renowned for its biodiversity. The area is also home to the Batwa people, who are highly dependent on its forests for their livelihoods and cultural traditions.
Efforts to protect these forests are challenged by conservation’s mixed record: Kahuzi-Biega’s expansion in the 1970s forced the displacement of thousands of local people, turning them into conservation refugees and sowing distrust in conservation initiatives.
One of the local organizations leading efforts to overcome these challenges is Strong Roots Congo, which was co-founded by Dominique Bikaba in 2009. Strong Roots Congo puts the needs of local people at the center of its strategy to protect endangered forests and wildlife in eastern DRC. ....

The Kayapó Indigenous people are standing up against gold mining and other extractive activities in their territories.

The government of Brazil is considering a bill that would open Indigenous territories to gold mining and mining by the oil and gas industries. This would threaten both the Amazon rainforest and the people that live there.
Over 6,000 Kayapó from 56 communities recently voiced their opposition to the bill: “We do not agree with individual statements made by Kayapó relatives in favor of gold mining,” their declaration reads. Although some leaders have succumbed to pressure to support the bill, the Kayapó people as a whole stand firmly against it. ....

10-year-old B.C. student becomes published author during COVID-19 lockdown

Ten-year-old Kiana Sosa self-published her first book after being asked to work on a passion project while learning online during the COVID-19 lockdown in B.C. this spring. (Submitted by Kiana Sosa)
For some, the pandemic lockdown was a chance to catch up on rest at home, but for a Grade 5 student in Burnaby, B.C., the unplanned quiet time was just the opportunity she needed to fulfil her dream of becoming an author.
Kiana Sosa, 10, said she wrote a book called 
Ellie and Lou and the Meaning of Friendship last year in Grade 4 for a classroom project. The story was then submitted to a local writing contest, thanks to the encouragement of her teacher, Livia Chan, and was chosen as one of the winning submissions to be included in an anthology. ....
