Athena Masson

Athena Masson is a hurricane expert and meteorologist originally from Florida. Since surviving Hurricane Andrew in 1992 she has dedicated her life to studying tropical cyclones and other severe weather phenomena. She has studied in several countries, including Antarctica, where she delivered the opening speech for the 2007 International Polar Year transmitted via satellite. While working toward her Bachelor of Science degree she received a certificat de langue française from la Sorbonne Université in Paris, France. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of San Francisco and began her graduate research at a place where tropical cyclones end: Newfoundland, Canada. For her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, she created a new hurricane scale for the North Atlantic that better classifies the strength of an approaching tropical cyclone as compared to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. ....

, a new series of web essays by several emerging experts who participated in the fall 2020 virtual North Pacific Arctic Conference, or NPAC, as Fellows. The annual meeting is organized by the East-West Center and supported by the Korea Maritime Institute.
Addressing the Arctic s immense future challenges will demand the talents and dedication of a highly knowledgeable new generation of leaders, said East-West Center Adjunct Senior Fellow Nancy Lewis, who spearheaded the NPAC Fellows program. The Spirit of the International Polar Year in Arctic International Cooperation

Modern polar scientific expeditions originated with the first International Polar Year in 1882–1883 and have developed further during each of the three subsequent International Polar Years, the most recent in 2007–2008. The idea for the first International Polar Year can be traced back to the 1870s, when the Austro-Hungarian military officer Karl Weyprecht campaigned for ship-borne expeditions to be replaced with a multinational network of land-based Arctic observatories or geophysical stations following the “failure” of an Arctic expedition he had led with another officer.
1 As a result of Weyprecht’s campaign, during the first International Polar Year 11 European nations combined their expeditions to study meteorology and magnetic phenomena in the Arctic. ....
