The pitch was bombed November 30, 1940, creating an 18-foot crater in the Milton Road penalty area.
In February 1941, Saints played a “home” War Cup tie with Brentford at Fratton Park, Portsmouth and the Dell was re-opened in October.
There were many notable moments for fans at The Dell.
Saints had the first permanent floodlights, using them in a friendly against Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic – now AFC Bournemouth – on October 31, 1950.
The fondly remembered “chocolate boxes” at the Milton Road end were replaced by 1984.
The Dell saw First Division football for the first time in 1966. ....

Heritage enthusiasts have discovered that a disused railway bridge outside Hampstead Norreys is one of hundreds across the country at risk of demolition or infill by government agency Highways England.
The bridge is located at Hackney Bottom, just outside the village and was part of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway line, opened in 1882.
Like structures of its kind up and down the country, it is the property of the Historical Railways Estate (HRE), which is managed by Highways England. ....

Looking through the history of Didcot with David Taylor


WITH the start of a new year, I thought I would take a look back at some of my previous submissions regarding the history of Didcot.
Archaeological digs indicate evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British occupation in the area. A Saxon settlement named Wibaldston was recorded in the Domesday register of 1086.
From approximately 1200, the name Duddas Cot (Cottage of Dydda) appears. The Stonor family owned the village of Duddas Cot for some 300 years, from 1300.
Didcot or Ducote as it was known continued as a typical agricultural village with farm labourers cottages huddled around All Saints Church in the Manor Road vicinity. ....
