Captain Tom Moore remembered with link to west Norfolk


The army veteran, who was from Keighley in West Yorkshire, inspired the nation when he walked 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire, before his 100th birthday during the first lockdown last April.
He initially set out to raise £1,000 but instead raised more than £32 million for the NHS.
He was knighted by the Queen for his efforts and was given the honorary title of colonel on his 100th birthday.
He also lived near Welney with his late wife Pamela and their daughters Hannah and Lucy while working at Cawood Concrete.
He is fondly remembered locally for helping to save one of the biggest employers in the Fens while living in the area for a few years in the 1980s. ....

CAPTAIN Tom Moore has tragically died aged 100 after a Covid battle. 
What did Captain Tom do in the war? 
Tom Moore enlisted into the eighth battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (8 DWR), an infantry unit that was converted to operate Churchill tanks as part of the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC).
He was selected for officer training and rose to the rank of captain, later being posted to 9 DWR in India.
He served and fought in the Arakan in western Burma, later renamed Rakhine State.
After this, he went with his regiment to Sumatra after the Japanese surrender in 1945 following the dropping of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ....

Christine Wilson recalls her late husband and keen cricketer Alan Wilson working with Captain Moore at March Concrete Products Ltd. 
She said: “The legend that is Captain Tom Moore lived in the Fens with his family for a few years in the 1980s. 
“He was appointed manager of Cawood Concrete Products Ltd following the retirement of Mr Alan Walton. 
“He instigated a management buy-out with four other staff members, including the late Alan Wilson who was the company secretary.” 
Mrs Wilson says they re-named the firm March Concrete Products Ltd, with a big relaunch on the River Thames in London.  ....
