Following consultations with the southern Mediterranean countries, the European Commission (EC) launched its new, ambitious, ‘Agenda for the Mediterranean’ February 9. The countries included in this scheme are: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia (Figure 1).
It addresses the usual objectives such as peace, security and the rule of law; but it also considers the green transition, climate resilience, energy and the environment.  ....

Irony as Saharan dust returns radiation from French nuclear tests in the 1960s


Dust from the Sahara Desert blown north by strong seasonal winds to France did not only bring stunning light and sunsets - it also carried abnormal levels of radiation.
That s according to French NGO Acro (Association for Control of Radioactivity in the West), which monitors levels of radiation.
The radiation is not considered dangerous for human health but it did arrive in France with a big dollop of irony.
Acro said it comes from nuclear tests carried out by France in the Algerian desert at the beginning of the 1960s, when the North African country was a French overseas territory. ....

Sahara dust reaching Estonia, may fall in snow, sleet or rain


Precipitation on Tuesday may bring with it a coating of dust from the Sahara desert, the state weather service (Riigi ilmateenistus) says.
Meteorologist Taimi Paljak told ETV news show Aktuaalne kaamera (AK) Tuesday that a powerful airflow had already been bringing the dust, created by storms in the Sahara, to the western edge of Europe, adding a warm air mass may bring it to Estonia between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday.
It will reach us via a small arc across the Gulf of Bothnia, across Finland, bringing snow and sleet too . and then it will reaches us, she said. ....
