Nashville license plate readers: Metro Council shelves issue for now

“There is no tool in the history of policing that’s been used equitably and hasn’t disproportionately impacted people of color,” At-Large Council member Sharon Hurt said.
If the technology is deployed, it would come as Police Chief John Drake has pledged to phase out routine traffic stops. Independent reviews found Nashville traffic stops disproportionately targeted people of color but did not reduce crime rates.
Council member Bob Nash, a former Nashville police commander, said he trusts Drake to implement a program that would be acceptable to the community and council.
"This is a license plate reader. It doesn't know if you're white, or if you're black, or if you're red or yellow," he said. "It doesn't know if you're rich or poor. It does know maybe if you're driving a stolen car."

Hundreds of volunteers flock to South Nashville to aid flood recovery

Many members of the team on Margo Lane said they were happy to spend their Saturday in service to others.
"Whenever things like this happen, we kind of gather together and get going," said Mary Grace Capps. She said she began volunteering with Hands On Nashville after the 2010 flood.
"We're resilient, and we come together whenever this town needs us," said Capps, a Nashville area native. "We love this town whether we've been here six months or our entire lives."
Capps and her fellow volunteers quickly got to work clearing clumps of branches and leaves that collected along a chain link fence when the water rose. They piled the debris onto a tarp and hauled it to a burning brush pile, which sent smoke drifting into the dazzling blue sky.

On Tuesday evening, Metro Councilmember Sandra Sepulveda plans to introduce a new bill that could raise Nashville’s standards for awarding construction contracts, emphasizing workplace safety and fair payment and compensation.
“We've been working on this for about a year, and we came to the table with several unions and several worker groups, and we’ve heard it all,” says the District 30 councilmember. “We've heard wage-theft stories, we've heard lack of sanitary facilities. … We've heard people who aren't trained. We've heard about retaliation.”

The United States Women’s National Team put Colombia in a blender, winning 6-0 in the second of two friendlies between the teams this week at Exploria Stadium. Catarina Macario and Midge Purce scored their first USWNT goals, Megan Rapinoe added a brace, and Lynn Williams and Lindsey Horan also scored for the Yanks, who once again smothered the Colombians with a stifling press that kept the visitors on their back heels all night.
