In the year since 22 people were killed during Canada’s deadliest mass shooting, Nova Scotia has had a turnabout from never using the national public-alerting system to now circulating urgent police warnings about “civil emergencies” more than all other Canadian jurisdictions combined.
Statistics released to The Globe and Mail show that officials in Nova Scotia have issued direct-to-cellphone alerts for nine police-related civil emergencies since late April, 2020, while seven other events elsewhere in Canada triggered such warnings. ....

Tara Long locks her doors now.
There is not a lot of crime in New Germany, N.S., a quiet, rural hamlet tucked into the pine trees of Lunenburg County, but that does little to ease her mind. In the past year, she’s installed a security fence around her house, surrounded herself with two large dogs and started keeping a gun nearby. ....

Yellow Pages apologizes for not omitting ad for N.S. killer's denture clinic from phone book

HALIFAX
Yellow Pages is apologizing after a coupon was printed in its latest phone book advertising the former denture clinic that once belonged to the killer behind Nova Scotia s mass shooting last April.
While the shooter s name doesn t appear in the book, his former business, Atlantic Denture Clinic, is advertised on a coupon offering a 10 per cent discount for dentures.
For such a careless mistake to be made and shoved to each of the households of Nova Scotia is nothing short of appalling, said Sandra McCulloch, one of the lawyers representing the victims families.
Max Meredith, a resident of West Chezzetcook, discovered the coupon this week. He noticed the same coupon printed in last year s phone book as well but is shocked it ended up in the book again. ....

Jack Knox: It took time, but 9/11 survivor found peace

“He returned to himself.”
Robin Lamprecht would have turned 80 on April 1.
His story has appeared here before, told to the Times Colonist’s Sandra McCulloch on the fifth anniversary of 9/11 and Katie DeRosa on the 10th.
At 8:46 a.m., Sept. 11, 2001, senior vice-president Lamprecht was addressing other Aon Corporation executives on the 103rdfloor of Tower Two of the World Trade Centre when a hijacked jet slammed into Tower One.
“I’m into my talk about five minutes and I see the plane over there, and it’s a giant plane,” he told McCulloch. “The next second, the plane went into the building. The fireball came out the other side. It was right in front of me. ....
