After asking several questions about noise, trees and property taxes, the Sandwich Planning Board on Wednesday, May 5, said âyesâ to a solar farm proposed for a parcel at the end of Jan Sebastian Drive. The 46-acre property, owned by the Housing Assistance Corporation, was the home of a community garden for several years. The unanimous vote by the planning board on Wednesday night will allow the acreage to metamorphose into 2.1-megawatt ground-mounted solar farm. The vote came after an hour-long public hearing. Much of that time was used by Lodestar Energyâs Dan Watson, business developer, to describe the project. ....
Staring in January, the retail sale of water in single-use plastic bottles will be forbidden in Sandwich. That is what voters at Town Meeting decided Monday night, May 3, after what amounted to the only lengthy debate of the evening. âI am beyond thrilled,â said Mary Cote, Sandwich spokeswoman for the environmental group sponsoring the bottle ban. âI had a feeling it would pass when I saw all the people coming in with their reusable water bottles.â The ban applies only to single-use, personal-sized plastic bottles of water. More specifically, it will curtail the sales and distribution of all plastic bottles that contain less than a gallon of non-carbonated, unflavored drinking water, according to the petition re-filed this year by the Brewster-based group Sustainable Practices. ....

As of Thursday, March 11, there was one (but just one) candidate for every open seat in the upcoming Sandwich Town Election. Town Clerk Taylor D. White said three candidates had stepped forward since last week to seek openings on the Sandwich Planning Board and the Library Board of Trusteesâthe only seats for which no one had declared. The new candidates are Paul Coteus of Pine Street, who is seeking a three-year term in the planning board; James Dever, a former Sandwich School Committee member who is seeking to fill a one-year unexpired seat on the planning board; and Jayne Burke of Carleton Drive East in East Sandwich, and Michael McCartney of Grand Oak Road in Forestdale, both of whom are seeking three-year terms on the library board. ....
