Open at the Albuquerque Art Museum beginning Saturday, June 12, “Eye to I: Self-Portraits from the National Portrait Gallery” gathers more than 50 works examining the ways American artists have portrayed themselves since the beginning of the last century. Curators have organized the exhibition chronologically by medium (photography, painting, printmaking and works on paper.)

With each self-portrait, artists either affirm or rebel against a sense of identity linking eye to “I.”

USA Today Readers' Poll Crowns MoCNA Third Best in the Country | News

May 7
Regular SFR readers will no doubt be aware we’ve got it bad for the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. The museum has particularly shined throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with Senior Manager of Museum Education Winoka Yepa (Diné) both developing a phone app and digitizing entire exhibits within the ArtSteps app, and that’s not even mentioning the ongoing artist residency opportunities including its most recent with Anna Tsouhlarakis (Diné/Greek/Creek) and Eric-Paul Riege (Diné) and exhibits.
Now, however, it seems like the rest of the world is finally catching on to the MoCNA magic, and
USA Today’s 10best.com readers’ poll website has named the Santa Fe institution the third-best art museum in the country. ....

Borders can be barriers or bridges.
Santa Fe’s Wheelwright Museum is showcasing “Indigenous Women: Border Matters” in a timely look at four Indigenous artists straddling both sides of the U.S. border. Their work explores contemporary issues of identity, human rights and the impact of living near that borderline through printmaking and sculpture.
......................
The roots of Gabriela Muñoz’s (Latinx) art practice grew from her time living in Arizona as an undocumented immigrant for more than a decade. When she earned her MFA at Arizona State University, she began producing work documenti ....

Light hearted: Exhibit will look at Native imagery reimagined through glass

No medium captures the dance of color and light more fully than the luminosity of glass.
Archaeological evidence suggests glass-making dates at least back to 3,600 B.C. in Mesopotamia, Egypt or Syria. Stone Age societies used naturally occurring obsidian glass for cutting tools and weapons.

Venetian glass artists have produced glass from the island of Murano for more than 1,500 years.
Glass gestated in Indian Country in the 1970s. And the legendary glass artist Dale Chihuly played midwife.
......................
When Santa Fe’s Institute of American Indian Arts rose from high school to a two-year college, its co-founder Lloyd Kiva New turned to the Rhode Island School of Design to help develop an art center. RISD sent Chihuly, who had created the glass program there, to New Mexico to set up a glass-making hot shop and to teach for one semester. Fa ....

Ambrose-Smith combines cartoon imagery with humor to create a complex reflection on an unstable world.
Love offers contrasting imagery in large-scale rock drawings with a geological sense of time across the millennia.
......................
Ambrose-Smith captures the seismic shifts erupting across the last four years with “The (Present) Tense.” He introduced the show through a large-scale neon sculpture inspired by a sketch of random lines. He placed the work on a 516 wall normally devoted to mammoth murals. ....
