Visionary media arts theorist and critic Gene Youngblood, whose prescient 1970 book
Expanded Cinema reshaped the fields of art and communications, predicted technological advances in filmmaking, and offered the first serious recognition of video and software-based works as cinematic art forms, died on April 6 in Santa Fe at the age of seventy-eight.
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1942, Youngblood spent most of the 1960s in Los Angeles variously working as a reporter and film critic for the

New Mexico has its first four cases of COVID-19 one year ago today: March 11, 2020. You know what happened next. We all do.
Still, it s hard to remember, given the twists and turns, stops and starts, health orders, closures and losses that ensued. New Mexico Reports 166 New COVID-19 Cases and 13 Deaths

New Mexico health officials today reported 166 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 185,297. The health department has designated 147,446 of those cases as recovered.
Of the state s 33 counties, 21 had reported new cases: 55 in Bernalillo County, followed by Doña Ana County with 38 and Sandoval County with 10. Santa Fe County had two new cases.
The state also announced 13 additional deaths; there have now been 3,729 fatalities.
As of today, 186 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.

38 new cases in Doña Ana County

As Mayor Alan Webber said when a national development company recently pulled out of trying to remake the city-owned Midtown Campus site, Santa Fe now faces making some “really hard decisions” about what to do with the 64-acre property.
For the past couple of years, there’s been excitement about what the campus could become after its former tenant, the for-profit Santa Fe University of Art and Design, closed two years ago. Much public comment was collected and conceptual designs, most of them innovative and futuristic, were submitted for what was described as an unprecedented opportunity to create a new neighborhood in the city’s geographical center. ....

Ex-developer backed demolition of SF Midtown buildings

SANTA FE – The future of Santa Fe’s coveted Midtown campus remains a mystery, but many of its current buildings may not survive.
KDC Real Estate Development and Investment/Cienda Partners, the former master developer of the Midtown campus, announced Jan. 21 it would terminate its agreement with the city of Santa Fe because the 64-acre campus had “no commercial value.”
Due to that lack of value, some buildings would likely have to be removed. KDC/Cienda recommended the city demolish 17 buildings on the campus, while preserving eight for any future use, according to a KDC/Cienda report obtained by the Journal. ....
