Differences between federal and local mask rules are creating confusion, frustration and in some cases hostile situations.
Santa Clara County residents breathed a sigh of relief this week with the move to the least-restrictive yellow tier in California s reopening plan, an indication that life might return to normal after more than a year of fear and anxiety.
The change in tiers came on the heels of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s announcement that fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to mask or social distance in any setting except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, including local business and workplace guidance. ....

Decision comes as Santa Clara County moves to least-restrictive yellow tier

Per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, Stanford will no longer require face coverings for fully vaccinated individuals outdoors, except when attending crowded outdoor events, the University announced on Tuesday. Santa Clara County will also move into the least-restrictive yellow tier of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy on Wednesday, amid record-low positivity rates and rising vaccination rates.
The lifting of county and University restrictions comes as Stanford reported zero new positive cases on campus for the first time since October in this week’s COVID Dashboard update. The ASSU also reported that 71% of Stanford undergraduates living on campus have been vaccinated. ....

Los Altos residents are “doing a great job” in the fight against COVID-19, the deputy city manager reported to the city council last week.
Jon Maginot told council members April 27 the city has “responded admirably” to the need for social distancing and mask wearing, reflected in the relatively low numbers of COVID-19 cases and the high numbers of vaccinations.
A review of the seven U.S. Census tracts in Los Altos reveals that the city totaled 636 reported cases of COVID since the pandemic began. In addition, Maginot said 82% of Los Altos residents ages 16 and older have had at least one dose of a vaccine. ....
